Work Permits in Canada

A Canadian work permit or a Work Visa is a document permitting overseas individuals to secure a job within Canada. In most cases, you’ll need a work permit to fill a job position in Canada. However, you may visit the Government of Canada’s official website to learn about the exemptions.

Open Work Permit

An open work permit allows you to work for any company or employer in Canada. There are few exceptions:

  • You cannot work with the employing association that is listed as ineligible on the list of employers that do not comply with certain regulations
  • You cannot work with the employers who regularly offers striptease, erotic dance, escort services or erotic massages.

Employer Specific Work Permit

An employer-specific work permit allows you to work in Canada according to certain conditions mentioned on your work permit, these conditions include:

  • The name of specific employer is already listed on your permit
  • Duration of work.
  • Work location (if applicable)
  • Before you submit an application for this permit, the employer needs to fulfill certain requirements. The employer should offer an employment number or a copy of the Labor Market Impact Assessment to include in the application.

Working for a Canadian employer adds towards your Canadian work experience, which in turn leads to higher chances of becoming a Canadian permanent resident or Canadian citizen.
