Permanent Resident Card Renewal

Applicants must prepare an application package to get a PR card. The application package will contain a completed Application for a Permanent Resident card renewal, a document checklist, photocopies of your identification documents, and a copy of the receipt confirming payment of fees.

In some cases, the application for PR Card renewal can be made on Humanitarian and Compassionate grounds even though the permanent resident has not met the residency requirements.

The application is submitted from within Canada. Your physical presence in Canada is required when you submit your application and when you pick up your new PR Card from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) office.

When Can You Apply For PR card renewal?

You can apply for a PR card renewal only in these cases:

You didn’t receive a PR card within 180 days since you came to Canada;
Your PR card has expired or will expire within the next 9 months;
Your PR card is destroyed, lost, or stolen;
You have changed your legal name and need to update the card.

PR Card Renewal Requirements and Eligibility

To be eligible to apply and obtain a PR card, you must:

Be a permanent resident of Canada;
Be physically present in Canada (730 days in the preceding 5 years);
Not be under an effective removal order;
Not be a Canadian citizen or a registered Indian under the Indian Act; and
Not be convicted of an offence related to the misuse of a PR card for those applicants under the age of 18.

To be eligible for a PR Card renewal, you must be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days out of the five-year period. Exceptions may apply if the applicant:

Has been traveling with a Canadian citizen who is their spouse, common-law partner, or their parent; or
Has been employed on a full-time basis by a Canadian business or in the federal public administration or the public service of a province; or
Was accompanying a permanent resident (who is their spouse, common-law partner, or their parent) that is employed on a full-time basis by a Canadian business or in the federal public administration or the public service of a province.

If you are outside Canada, you must apply for a permanent resident travel document, and apply for a PR card when you come back to Canada.
