Visitor Record Travel Visa Extension

The extension of a Canadian temporary resident visa is called Visitor Record, which is used to maintain status in Canada and cannot be used for entry and exit (except going to or from the United States). Visitor record holders cannot legally study or work in Canada ( the document looks similar to work permits and study permits but with different functions).

Applicant’s statuses that are about to expire but do not meet the conditions for applying for a study permit or work permit and wish to continue legally in Canada can also apply for visitor records.

Application Requirements

A temporary resident can apply for an extension of stay by renewing their  legal status. Following is the eligibility criteria for the same:

  • Applicants whose work permit or study permit is about to expire but want to stay in Canada for various reasons
  • Applicants who have entered Canada with a Visitor Visa and will stay for more than 180 days
  • Applicants who have submitted an immigration application, are waiting for approval in Canada and their current Canadian status is about to expire
  • If you have lost your legal status in Canada (work permit or study permit expired), or have entered the country with a Visitor Visa for more than 180 days, you cannot directly apply for Visitor Record.

Applicants need to contact the Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) through web or paper application with all listed documents and forms required in the document checklist.
