Extending Your Study Permit in Canada

You can apply for an extension of your study permit 30 days before your student permit expires. If your permit expires while your extension application is under review, this effectively extends the validity of your study permit until a decision is made. You may continue to stay in Canada, study and work (on-campus or off-campus, depending on the terms of your study permit) while you wait for a decision on your application.

Until a decision has been made on your extension application, you are not allowed to leave Canada or else your permit will automatically expire.

Conditions for Extension

International students in Canada can apply for an extension of their study permit in following situations:

  • Their original study permit is expiring while their course of study has not completed yet.
  • They started another course of study after successful completion of their initial course of study.
  • Passport expired before the end of the study program
  • Changes in the program of study (Update DLI)
  • Need more time to complete the course/program

An extension of your stay as a student may be granted if you have met the following conditions:

  • You have maintained your student status.
  • You have made satisfactory progress in your studies.
  • You still meet the initial criteria for admission to your program of study.
