Canada Immigration Through Express Entry Program

Permanent residents returning to Canada by airplane, boat, train, or bus must show a valid PR Card. If they are outside Canada and don’t have a valid PR card or their PR card has expired, they may apply for a permanent resident travel document (PRTD) to return to Canada.

A PRTD is generally a one-way visa to return to Canada that is valid for several months. The permanent resident can use the PRTD to travel to Canada, once in Canada, apply for a new PR Card to be able to travel regularly.

Eligibility for PRTD

You can apply for a permanent resident travel document if you:

  • are a permanent resident
  • do not have a valid PR card showing your PR status
  • are outside Canada, and will return to Canada by airplane, boat, train or bus.
  • meet the residency obligation of a permanent resident.

Who can not apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document?

You may not be eligible to apply for a permanent resident travel document if you are:

  • Canadian citizen
  • a foreign nationals who do not have Permanent Resident status in Canada.
  • a permanent residents with a valid PR Card.
  • a past permanent resident who have lost their PR status.
  • a permanent resident who want to voluntarily give up (renounce) their permanent residence status.

An officer will decide if you are eligible for a PRTD. A decision is usually made without a personal interview and is based on your application, information and documents submitted.
